Acetylcysteine (rINN; pronounced /əˌsɛtəlˈsɪstiːn/), also known as N-acetylcysteine or N-acetyl-L-cysteine (abbreviated NAC), is a pharmaceutical drug and nutritional supplement used primarily as a mucolytic agent and in the management of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose. Other uses include sulfate repletion in conditions, such as autism, where cysteine and related sulfur amino acids may be depleted.

A. Acetylcysteine is the generic name for Mucomyst. It's an expectorant or more precisely it thins out mucous when it comes in direct contact with it. We used to nebulize it with a bronchodilator added because it could be irritating to the mucous membranes of the bronchial tree. It was effective in thinning out very tenacious secretions in certain pulmonary conditions. It is also used in the treatment of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose. It smells and tastes like rotten eggs, or sulfurous odor.Something I just learned is that is used in certain psychological disorders. As to whether it has a use when it is gargled , I have never heard nor could I find a reference to it. God bless.

what should i do???
Q. as some of you know,... we got a 4-5mth old german/retriever mix from a shelter last wed. we were told she had kennel cough... she didnt. she has distemper with a secondary infection of phemonia, (sorry for the miss spell). so i was givin some meds...Azithromycin to give to .8CCs once daily and Acetylcysteine (20%-10ml) to give every 6 hours. well, after bringing her home yesterday... we gave her a steam treatment (cause of her breathing) as we gently patted the sides of her chest (as the vet recom.) well... she coughed, which was a good sign, but then she sneezed, when blood started dripping from her nose. well, we freaked out, but it wasnt a lot coming out, so we waited. well... its been nearly 24 hours and she is still dripping… [cont.]

A. Definately take her to the vet asap. I wouldn't let the shelter put her down, she's just a baby. The only way I would consider euthanasia is if her condition was terminal, and without a vet's opinion, how do you know?

My friend overdosed on paracetamol 2 days ago?? PLEASE HELP!?
Q. (Yes, this is about a friend. No, I cannot physically take them to the hospital because the distance between us is too great.) So about two days ago my friend (a teenager) took 30 paracetamol pills with coffee. In about 8 hours they were feeling pretty bad, throwing up and in pain, and after about 11 hours they got their mom to take them to the hospital. They lied about the overdose and said that they'd been taking 3 Panadols every day for the past week to the doctors and their mother.. What I've gathered by talking to them was the doctors poked their stomach a bit and they threw up more, and then the doctors gave them an IV medicine (it's supposed to be acetylcysteine, but since they lied, I don't know if it's the correct dosage or even… [cont.]

A. I feel like I've heard the same story on the internet very recently about the same circumstances... Anyways, APAP OD is the leading cause of liver failure in the USA. Basically, his liver may be fried. Tell him he needs to go back to be examined STAT. Not to scare you, but if its bad enough, he may need a liver transplant, or he may not depending on the previous state. That is not great. Tell him or his family that it is urgent, the lethal dose for APAP is 8000mg, and that depends on body weight. Tell him that his life is more important, because this is very serious, liver failure is a baaad way to die. Maybe tell his mom. I know that you said it was on the opposite side of the liver, but pain can be weird sometimes. He very well… [cont.]
